The Facts about Homeless Youth and Ageing Out of Care:
- When youth age out of the system at 19 years old, they no longer received Ministry supports, thereby putting them at serious risk of loss of identity, family, community, and culture.
- Some of the well documented barriers include low self-esteem, depression, trauma, intergenerational trauma, insufficient education, poverty, racism, and prejudice.
- Studies who three out of five homeless youth were part of the child welfare system. Out of those, two out of five had ‘aged out’ of care resulting in the loss of the support they needed to help them from becoming homeless.
- In Canada almost half of the youth in care are Indigenous. This is alarming considering Indigenous people only make up 4% of the Canadian population.
